Established The Willie and Mazie Glover Scholarship Fund in 2013 The Willie and Mazie Glover Scholarship fund was established by their descendants to honor their lifetime dedication to promoting learning. Mr. and Mrs. Glover were born in Bamberg and Orangeburg Counties South Carolina in the early 1900’s and lived their lives in Bamberg, South Carolina in the Midway Community.
The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize the long term, continuous dedication to family and hard work that was put into sharing what life had taught them in a poor farming community. They were share-crop farmers that had to rely on family and friends to help with the work on the farm. With only seasonal income, good money management and planning was necessary to maintain a home and meet family needs. They were parents to two sons and traditionally children were used to assist with work on the farm until the crops were gathered. Cotton was the main crop which was planted in the spring when the school year was nearing the end; and harvested during the beginning of the school year. The Glovers did not keep their sons out of school for work on the farm or for any reason that would keep them from being successful in their learning. They shared their stories of life with their children and grandchildren to have them better understand the importance of school and formal learning to make life and the community in which you live a better place. The Willie and Mazie Glover Scholarship Fund will provide full or partial scholarships to one or more selected students to pursue a college degree in accounting. The award will be announced in the spring with payment for fall enrollment. The number of scholarships and amount awarded will be based on applicant pool and funding available. Mr. Freddie Johnson will review the applications and make award based on the criteria. Right now, we are funding the scholarship for $10,000 with the possibility of creating a permanent endowment in the future. We are excited about creating this scholarship for the students at Atlanta Metropolitan State College and look to having a long and fruitful relationship with the school.
