The Luke Project: Leading Urban Kids into Excellence Sponsored Annual Charity Golf Benefit www.thelukeproject.org
The Luke Project focuses its efforts in two major environments – each a key piece to building meaningful relationships with children living in Atlanta’s inner city. The Luke Project accepts financial support for these programs throughout the year. The first is LukeCamp which provides a nine-week summer day camp and a one-week overnight camp for children age 7 – 14 in underserved communities of Atlanta. The Second is LukeSports which provides football, basketball, soccer and cheerleading for 2,200+ athletes. Click here to join us in sponsoring the Luke Project’s Annual Charity Golf Benefit.
The Georgia Food Bank Association
The Georgia Society of CPAs and Georgia’s Accounting Community joined forces to organize the Georgia Accounting Food Fight. The friendly rivalry, now in its 5th year, provides support to the Georgia Food Bank Association and other food banks across the state. Rumph and Associates were named the winner in the Small Firm category. All food and money raised by the firm will directly benefit the Atlanta Community Food Bank. For every one dollar donated, the ACFB is able to provide four meals to adults and children in need. The Rumph and Associates donation will allow the food bank to provide over 40,000 additional, nutritious meals. “Fighting hunger and providing for kids is big for us,” explains Tom Rumph, managing partner at Rumph and Associates. “We decided to really get into the food fight this year because it’s important and near and dear to us, so we put a lot of effort into it. And even though the food fight has ended, we are planning to do more. Helping others is always a priority for us.”
During the food fight, held over a two-week period in August, participants were charged with putting forth their best efforts to raise the most food and money for their regional food banks. There were several competition categories including: industry winner; sole proprietor winner; small, medium, and larger firm winners; and the Big 4 winner. In addition, two grand prize winners were announced in the Food Fight Hero and Hunger Champion categories. Over 60 accounting firms and industry accounting departments representing more than 5,000 members competed in the food fight. Those participants collectively raised a record-breaking $174,367 and 5,915 pounds of food for Georgia’s food banks (www.georgiafoodbankassociation.org). In total, the amount of money and food raised during the Georgia Accounting Food Fight will provide the equivalent of 702,399 meals for families across the state. Atlanta Metropolitan State College Foundation
Established The Willie and Mazie Glover Scholarship Fund in 2013 The Willie and Mazie Glover Scholarship fund was established by their descendants to honor their lifetime dedication to promoting learning. Mr. and Mrs. Glover were born in Bamberg and Orangeburg Counties South Carolina in the early 1900’s and lived their lives in Bamberg, South Carolina in the Midway Community.
The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize the long term, continuous dedication to family and hard work that was put into sharing what life had taught them in a poor farming community. They were share-crop farmers that had to rely on family and friends to help with the work on the farm. With only seasonal income, good money management and planning was necessary to maintain a home and meet family needs. They were parents to two sons and traditionally children were used to assist with work on the farm until the crops were gathered. Cotton was the main crop which was planted in the spring when the school year was nearing the end; and harvested during the beginning of the school year. The Glovers did not keep their sons out of school for work on the farm or for any reason that would keep them from being successful in their learning. They shared their stories of life with their children and grandchildren to have them better understand the importance of school and formal learning to make life and the community in which you live a better place. The Willie and Mazie Glover Scholarship Fund will provide full or partial scholarships to one or more selected students to pursue a college degree in accounting. The award will be announced in the spring with payment for fall enrollment. The number of scholarships and amount awarded will be based on applicant pool and funding available. Mr. Freddie Johnson will review the applications and make award based on the criteria. Right now, we are funding the scholarship for $10,000 with the possibility of creating a permanent endowment in the future. We are excited about creating this scholarship for the students at Atlanta Metropolitan State College and look to having a long and fruitful relationship with the school.
